Hampshire Community Buildings, England

  • Energy Audit

Hampshire County Council (HCC) declared a Climate Emergency in July 2019 and set a target to be carbon neutral by 2050. Working with local community groups will be key to delivery of this target. Undertaking Energy Audits for Community Buildings was the first step in the process.

Background

Run almost entirely by volunteers, Community Buildings such as Village Halls are a cornerstone of community life, providing what are often the only spaces where people can meet and socialise. They also sustain many livelihoods connected with use of the venue.

But over the past couple of years many community buildings have struggled to meet rising energy bills – indeed many buildings are old, off the mains gas grid, and difficult to heat.

The Energi IQ team assisted in the scheme by delivering 16 no. Energy Audit Reports for various Community Buildings throughout Hampshire. These buildings included:

✓ Bramshaw Village Hall✓ Durley Memorial Hall
✓ Heckfield Memorial Hall✓ Hilldene Community Centre
✓ Houghton Village Hall✓ Liss Parish Council Office
✓ Liss Village Hall✓ Littleton Millennium Memorial Hall
✓ Shalden Village Hall✓ Sherborne St Johns Social Club, Basingstoke
✓ Townhill Farm Community Centre✓ Upton Grey Village Hall
✓ Waltham Chase Village Hall✓ West End Youth Centre
✓ West Liss Recreation Ground Pavilion✓ Woodland Community Centre

Energy Audits

The Energy Audit Reports were the first stage of the process to help organisations identify energy saving opportunities for their buildings across key areas like HVAC, Lighting, Hot Water and Building Fabric enhancements along with recommending opportunities for renewable technologies.

Outcomes

In the second stage of the process, the organisations applied for capital grants from Hampshire County Council energy efficiency grant funding to install improvements as recommended in the Energy Audit Reports. Many of these improvements have now been completed thanks to the funding supports awarded by the scheme.
