Established in 2000, Hennelly’s Carry Out is a family-owned Off-Licence in Gort, County Galway. Through an SEAI fully funded Energy Audit, the business decided to begin their energy efficiency and sustainability journey
Background
Off licences use a significant amount of refrigeration to keep drinks cooled to a desired temperature. Commercial refrigeration systems typically have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Beyond this period, the system’s components may experience increased wear, leading to diminished performance and efficiency.
The existing 25 year old refrigeration at Hennelly’s Carry Out has surpassed the typical lifespan by over a decade. With this degradation and the ever increasing cost of electricity means the running of the dated refrigeration has seen their energy bills increase exponentially in recent years.
Therefore, they decided to apply to SEAI for a €2,000 voucher towards the cost of a professional energy audit selecting Energi IQ as their preferred auditor.
The Audit
A SEAI registered Energy Auditor from Energi IQ visited site in March 2025. A detailed site survey of the store was carried out, including identifying significant energy users.
Existing energy consumption over the previous 12 months was collated using energy billing provided by the client to establish a baseline year. From this energy trends over twelve months were analysed and benchmarked.
The report was then compiled providing a comprehensive list of energy upgrade recommendations that could be implemented to reduce their energy use with potential funding sources identified.
Outcomes
Recommendations included:
Installing all of the recommended measures would lead to an 85% reduction in energy costs.
All measures can be implemented with grants from either the SEAI or Local Enterprise Office which offers a significant contribution towards the capital costs of the upgrades. By availing of this funding, all measures can be implemented with an ROI of less than 5 years.
