Vaughan’s Service Station on the Spanish Point Road in Miltown Malbay has served the local community since 2008. Owners Leonard and Ann-Marie have developed the site into a large operation with multiple significant energy users. They availed of a free SEAI Energy Audit through the SEAI’s Support Scheme for Energy Audits (SSEA) to explore opportunities to reduce their energy consumption, generate energy onsite and save on their energy costs.

Background

The owners Leonard and Ann-Marie Vaughan have been proactive in recent years having already implemented several energy efficiency upgrades including installing new refrigeration, new AC units and installing LEDs & PIR sensors throughout.

Through an Energy Audit they would identify more opportunities for additional upgrades and explore options for generating electricity on site through the installation of Solar PV on the roof. They applied to the SEAI for a €2,000 voucher towards the cost of a professional energy audit selecting Energi IQ as their preferred auditor.

The Audit

A SEAI registered Energy Auditor from Energi IQ visited site in May 2025. A detailed site survey of the facility was carried out, including identifying significant energy users.

Existing energy consumption over the previous 12 months was collated using energy billing provided by the client to establish a baseline year. From this energy trends over twelve months were analysed and benchmarked.

The report was then compiled providing a comprehensive list of energy upgrade recommendations that could be implemented to reduce their energy use with potential funding sources identified.

Outcomes

Recommendations included:

  • Replace dated Oil-fired heating system with Air Source Heat Pump
  • Install Solar PV & Battery
  • Install Energy Management System
  • Energy Management training for staff through the SEAI Energy Academy

Installing all of the recommended measures would lead to an 52% reduction in energy costs.

All measures can be implemented with grants from either the SEAI or Local Enterprise Office which offers a significant contribution towards the capital costs of the upgrades. By availing of this funding, all measures can be implemented with an ROI of less than 5 years.

Benefits from implementing measures from this Energy Audit

  • Reduced running costs
  • More environmentally friendly heating system
  • Positive reaction from customers
  • Upskilling staff on Energy Management
  • Easy to apply for SEAI and LEO funding
